NASCAR’s Oldest Survivor – #87 Oldsmobile Rocket 88

As another NASCAR season winds up I thought it would be fun to look at some survivors from the series glorious past.

Today’s featured #87 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 is believed to be the oldest existing ‘original’ NASCAR racing vehicle,
the 1949 model is distinguishable by it’s split front screen.

The Rocket V8 303 cui engine makes the car a true ancestor of the light body/chassis big engine “muscle car’. This motor, produced in Lancing, Michigan, was the first post war overhead valve V8 from General Motors and remained in production in the 303 size until 1953, the 1949 version of this engine produced 135 horse power, against the contemporary flat head Ford V8 which produced just 100 hp.

Oldsmobile Rocket 88’s won half of the first 60 NASCAR Late Model races between 1949 and 1950. Buck Baker first drove the #87 Oldsmobile at Darlington on Sept 4th, 1950 coming in 69th (of 75 !) after qualifying 28th.

Elzie Wylie (Buck) Baker 1919 – 2002 took part in his first race at Greenville, SC blew a tyre and posted a DNF, he entered the first two NASCAR races in 1949 in the #87 Kaiser.
His first of 49 NASCAR wins came at Columbia on April 12th 1952 driving the #89 Hudson.

Bucks greatest achievement was wining titles in 1956 driving Ford, Chrysler and Dodge models and again in 1957 driving the #87 Chevy, he did not run full (56 race) schedules in either year, but still became the first winner of consecutive NASCAR titles.

His last win was recorded at Darlington driving the #3 Dodge in 1964 Buck retired in 1976 on October 10th at Charlotte after he came in 24th from a 38th place start in the #59 Chevrolet.

In 1980 Buck founded the Buck Baker Racing school which list graduates, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart who between them have won seven Cup Titles.

Apart from Buck drivers of this particular Oldsmobile in the Sportsman / Modified division from 1951 to 1961 include, Gene Darragh, Paul Goldsmith, Darel Dieringer and Lee Petty who raced the vehicle at Daytona International Speedway, along way from its first race on dirt track at Charlotte.

Summer Classics – Easter Compton

After visiting Queen Square a couple of weeks ago I popped over to Easter Compton for the Summer Classics meeting.

Volkswagen Beetle, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Representing the home of the Volkswagen, Wolfsburg (Wolfs Castle), was this 1959 Beetle.

Citroën CX 25 GTi Turbo, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Turbo’s were all the rage in the 1980’s this is a top of the range Citroen CX 25 GTi Turbo from 1985 capable of 130 mph.

Raleigh Safety Seven, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

From 1933 an air cooled twin cylinder Raleigh Safety Seven 3 wheeler, built by the manufacturer in Nottingham better known for building bicycles since 1885 as it does to the present day.

Pontiac Firebird, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

If the signage on this California Highway Patrol car is to be believed this 1997 Pontiac Firebird was converted from a drug dealers car, though I suspect that might just be a bit of PR. If you know different please do not hesitate to chip in below.

Delta was an upmarket trim option introduced to the Oldsmobile 88 in 1965, this Oldsmobile Delta 88 was built in 1972.

Dodge Deluxe Convertible, Summer Classics, Easter Compton Convertible, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Dodge is celebrating it’s centenary this year, this 1948 Dodge Deluxe Convertible with Fluid Drive transmission was based on a design that went back to 1940 complete with L head side valve motor. These solid Chrysler Corporation D24 cars outsold Fords in the immediate aftermath of World War 2.

Chrome, Stripes And A Sheriff – Classics At The Castle

This weeks Americana Thursday blog comes from Classics at the Castle where a fabulous selection of US cars were on display.

Pontiac Le Mans, Classics At The Castle, Sherborne

My favourite was this ’67 Pontiac Le Mans, somewhere around the time this car was built the US show the Monkees hit our shores and even on the steam powered black and white the Pontiac derived Monkeemobile looked like the coolest thing on the planet perhaps bettered only by the crime fighting jet powered Batmobile.

Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, Classics At The Castle, Sherborne

I looked at a Mustang Cobra Jet a couple of weeks ago, it apppears that there are at least two in south west.

Similarly I looked at a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor not so long ago, this one is said to have served Hurricane Katrina hero Sheriff Bill McGee who commandeered water for citizens in Forrest County, Mississippi from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for which he was charged with interfering with, intimidating and impeding a federal officer.

In 1957 you would be pushed to find more graceful Detroit sheet metal than that found on the Cadillac Series 62 Coupé de Ville.

Yate Town FC Host – Bristol American Car Show

After seeing the start of the Chipping Sodbury Classic Run a couple of weeks ago, I popped along to the Bristol American Car Show at Yate Town Football Club.

A fabulous assortment of vehicles included this ’59 Ford Edsel Station Wagon which in li’l ol’ England would be difficult to fit in a standard ASDA, UK Walmart, parking space and could easily pass for a mobile home.

Kenworth W900L, Bristol American Car Show, Yate Town FC

The only thing we have ever built of comparable size to the Kenworth W900L is a military all wheel drive tracked vehicle transporter, this Kenworth could also double as a great ‘Glamper’ for a music festival like Glastonbury.

The twin vertical headlight clusters, taken from the ’66 Ford Fairlane, above tell me that this is a 1967 model year Ford Ranchero.

Buick Riviera , Bristol American Car Show, Yate Town FC

Looking super fly was this 1972 Riviera by Buick.

1970’s down sizing did little for US Automotive design as the 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupé above attests, unless like me your a fan of big bumper Volvo’s of course.

Dodge RAM 1500 Daytona, Bristol American Car Show, Yate FC

Finally above a 345hp Hemi powered 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 Daytona pickup, described by one reviewer as having plenty of Go Man Go !

Classic Run Americana – Chipping Sodbury

Just over a week ago a friend mentioned he was taking part in the Chipping Sodbury Classic (Car) Run and I thought it would be fun to pop over to see what was happening.

Chrysler 77 Royale Coupé, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

There were a trio of Chryslers taking part two late twenties, E80 convertibles and this 1930 77 Royale Coupé a vehicle spold on it’s superior engineering which included standard “weatherproof hydraulics” for the braking system and came in without extra’s at $1725.

Oldsmobile Saloon, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

By 1937 US cars were displaying a good deal more Art Deco style than they had been just seven years earlier, an Oldsmobile Six also known as as an F37 and also “The Four Door Touring Sedan, a vehicle in US culture by the 1983 low budget made for TV production of “A Christmas Story” which was declared to be “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Hudson Commodore 8, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

In 1942 Hudson was ordered to stop making vehicles for civilian use in order to contribute to the war effort. On the 30th of August 1945 Hudson resumed civilian vehicle manufacture with the mildly face lifted Hudson Commodore 8 at the top of it’s range. The convertible seen above is a 1947 model which was replaced by a completely new design in 1948.

Ford F100, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

Inspired by the F-100 Super Sabre Jet fighter Ford changed the name of it’s second generation F Series pickup from F1 to F100, the example above was built in 1955 and is powered by a 4.7 litre 286 cui motor.

Ford Mustang, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

Today’s tenuous link brings together the Hudson Commodore 8 convertible and the Ford Mustang. One of the team who contributed to the design of the pre war Hudson Commodore 8 was Elizabeth Ann Thatcher who left Hudson in 1941 when she married Cadillac designer Joe Oros who went on to become head of the design team at Ford that created the Mustang. The example seen above is a second generation model built in ’67.

Pontiac GTO Convertible, Classic Run Chipping Sodbury

Today’s final featured vehicle is a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans sport convertible with a GTO options including a rare spoiler on the boot / trunk lid. The reason the spoiler is rare is because soon after production of the accessory started the mould broke and the item was subsequently deleted from the options list.

Christmas Came Early – Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Last weekend I joined my friends from the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club in the back of a Ford Transit and headed for the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham where the Classic Motor Show was in full swing.

Oldsmobile Curved Dash, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Amongst my favourites in the seven halls packed with cars was this 5hp single cylinder 1903 Oldsmobile Curved Dash a regular runner despite spending 50 years in the USA from 1950 to 2002 virtually unused.

Austin 1800 UTE, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Austin was a well known British manufacturer which got swallowed up in the British Motor Corporation empire, to meet demand for a pick up in the Antipodes the Australian BMC plant devised the Austin 1800 UTE (Australian for Pickup) based on the front wheel drive ‘Landcrab’ ADO 17 platform. This was the first time I had seen such a vehicle.

Aston Martin DBS V8 Ogle, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Bristol

The Aston Martin DBS V8 Ogle was a concept car commissioned by WD & HO Wills to promote the then new brand of Sotherby cancer sticks, it was first seen at the 1972 Geneva Motor Show. Among the many interesting features were an array of no less than 22 rear lights which included sequential lights for indicating, the number of brake lights showing varied according to the brake pressure applied. So far as I can discern this is one of three Wills ordered a second car in Red and White to promote it’s Embassy brand and a middle aged lady is reputed to have paid £30,000 for a third.

ISO Rivolta Fidia, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

John Lennon is known to have been a somewhat reluctant driver, but he knew what he liked in a car and that was summed up in the Iso Rivolta Fidia, the one above is the second of three that he purchased. This one is unusual because it has a Chevrolet V8 motor in place of the standard Ford V8.

Vauxhall Cavalier Sportshatch, Classic Motor Show, NEC,  Birmingham

In the late 1970’s and 1980’s Vauxhalls and Opels became increasingly similar above is a Vauxhall Cavalier Sports Hatch which had much in common with the second generation Opel Manta. This particular one has body kit which makes it look even more like the Chevrolet Monza that inspired the design and a non standard turbocharged motor to improve it’s performance.

Anadol A8, Classic Motor Show, NEC,  Birmingham

News to me at the motor show was that Turkey had an indigenous motor industry not only building vehicles from knock down kits but having a manufacturer Anadol who made cars initially to a design by the same Ogle who designed The Sotherby Special. For 1981 Anadol felt confident enough with it’s own design capabilities to launch the Ford Kent powered A8 model. Only 1013 were built when the plug was pulled in 1984. This one was driven over 5000 reliable miles to the UK from Turkey.

Daimler DS420, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Bristol

Sadly the Daimler DS420 limousine launched in 1968 was mostly made up of parts from the Jaguar parts bin including the XK engine. In fact the model was the last to be manufactured powered by the XK engine when production closed in 1992. The example seen here is from 1986/87.

Lamborghini 25th Anniversary Countach , Classic Motor Show,

Celebrating 50 years of Lamborghini production was Lamborghini Club UK who’s display included this 1988 Lamborghini 25th Anniversary Countach.

Ginetta G33, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

The Ginetta G33 continues to grow on me, ever since I saw one competing at Gurston Down earlier this year I have had a real yearning to try the model.

Bristol Fighter, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

The undisputed high light of the day for me however came when Bristol Owners Club member Mr Gibbs owner of this 210 mph Bristol Fighter, the last Bristol to be completed to date, invited me to try the drivers seat for size, wow !, what an experience at 6′ tall I do not fit comfortably in many cars, especially those with any kind of performance credibility but the Bristol fitted like a glove. After posting this blog next on my to do list is write a nice letter to a big chap with a white beared and a red and white outfit, Dear Santa …..

Americana – Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance

At the back end of June Geoffrey Horton attended the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance, apparently there was some confusion during the prize giving thanks what appears to have been a break down in communication between the judges and marshalls which left Geoffrey unsure if he and his Jaguar XK 140 had won a prize, if so which one, or not.

Among the photo’s Geoffrey kindly sent me were several of US built machines, above a Packard which I believe might be a 1936 One-Twenty though I’ll gladly take a second opinion the top mounted wipers appear to be the most useful clue as to the date.

The script above the front fender trim on this Cadillac combined with the old school tail dating back to pre 1939/45 war makes this a 1947 model year and I’ll hazard a guess it’s big enough to be a Cadillac 62, if you know different do not hesitate to chime in below.

Oldsmobile Eighty Eight, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

The squarish liberally chrome decorated 1958 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight is relatively simple to identify, not the James Bond gadget like fuel filler hidden by the tail light.

Above a fine example of a 1959 Buick Le Sabre basks in the sun, unfathomably, with the roof up !

Pontiac Grand Prix, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

Finally the windscreen of the 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix above displayed a certificate confirming that at least 90% of this vehicle remains within it’s factory new originality, finish and condition.
