More Porsche Odds & Ends – GALPOT Automobilia

This weeks GALPOT Automobilia blog features some more Porsche related ads and articles from MotorSport magazine dated 1970 to 1978 which are currently for auction on my lightpress e-bay page.

1970 Monte Carlo Rally, 2 page spread MotorSport Magazine

Bjorn Waldegård and Lars Helmer driving a Porsche 911S won the 1970 Monte Carlo Rally for the second time in a row and Porsche for the third consecutive time. The two page tearout from MotorSport March 1970 above shows the winning Porsche, third placed Alpine Renault, two surviving Lancia Fulvia’s and the 5th place Ford Escort Twin Cam.

1974 East African Safari Rally, 1 page tearout, MotorSport Magazine

Bjorn Waldegård and Hans Thorszelius were on target to win the 1974 East African Safari Rally in their yellow Porsche Carrera bottom, until repairs to their rear suspension dropped them to second behind the Mitsubishi Lancer of Joginder Singh and David Doig seen in the top photo of this single page tearout of the event taken from MotorSport June 1974.

Pirelli P7, Martini Porsche Turbo Ad MotorSport May 1978

The May 1978 edition of MotorSport contained several Porsche related items including this Pirelli P7 tyre ad featuring a Martini striped Porsche 930 Turbo road car.

Porsche 911 SC Targa ad, MotorSport Magazine 1978

In the same issue I found this ad for a 180hp Porsche 911 SC Targa, prices for the Porsche 911 SC range back then started at just £12,600 pounds a number which these days might just get you a Volkswagen.

Porsche 911 SC Sport, article MotorSport Magazine, May 1978

Finally the May 1978 issue of MotorSport Magazine carried this three side Porsche 911 SC Sport road test, one of the pictures show’s the car parked on an unbelievably empty Westminster Bridge in front of Big Ben showing nearly 13:50 and without a single tourist in sight ! The test concluded “Potential customers can make up their own minds, if they are prepared to join the queue !

Thanks to everyone who has spread the GALPOT word and especially those who have made purchases.

Porsche Odds and Ends – GALPOT Automobilia

Last week I came across some Porsche related Automobilia taken from a couple of MotorSport Magazines dated from 1968 to 1976 which are now for sale on my lightpress e-bay page.

Porsche 911T, MotorSport Front Cover

This April 1968 front cover of MotorSport magazine features an image depicting Pauli Toivonen and Marti Tiukkanen driving a Porsche 911T to victory on the 1968 San Remo Rally. In 1968 Pauli won five rallies driving a Porsche 911T on route to winning the 1968 European Rally Championship.

Porsche 911 Models, Motorsport

In the same April 1968 issue I found this article/infomercial about Porsche 911 Models offered by the factory to the UK market, it lists prices for the; 912 Coupé, 911T Coupé, 911L Coupé and 911S, Coupé, Sportmatic transmission option for all 911 models. Mention is made of the competition 911R which was built to special order only without any price being mentioned.

Porsche 911 Models, Motorsport

By 1970 MotorSport photographer and correspondent Micheal “MJT” Tee had clocked up 50,000 miles in his 911, the first to enter the UK fitted with Weber carburetors as standard. MJT concluded the 2 page report seen above with the words “the best”.

Autofarm, Motorsport

Finally by 1976 some Porsche 911’s were getting on for 13 years old which led well led club racers and Autofarm founders Josh Sadler and Steve Carr to accidentally uncovering a huge market for after market parts and servicing for customers who could not afford official Porsche dealer parts and labour rates. The article above written by MotorSport journalist “C.R.” out lining Autofarm’s expertise was published in January 1976.

Thanks for joining me on this Porsche Odds and Ends edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I’ll be recounting tales from the last meeting of the season run at Castle Combe earlier this month. Don’t forget to come back now.

The Power Of Dreams – Guglielmi Motorsport Lotus Exige

The Lotus Exige Series 1 coupé was launched in 2000, curiously just as production of the Lotus Elise Series 1 soft top on which it was based was about to be phased out in favour of the sharper styled Elise Series 2.

Like the Elise the Exige was powered by a Rover K series motor which all though not particularly powerful was enough to turn the lightweight Elise into a performance car with particular appeal to those who enjoy track days.

Today’s featured Exige was prepared by Guglielmi Motorsport who’s proprietor Steve Guglielmi was the 2001/2 double TVR Tuscan Challenge Champion. The Guglielmi Motorsport website suggests Steve retired from racing, although not from all competition, as of 2002 when he set up his Guglielmi Motorsport business to prepare road & track vehicles.

In 2011 Steve prepared this Exige which he shares with Jeff Mileman for the Britcar series. Above the #58 Guglielmi Exige is seen passing the #60 Ginetta G50 G4 coming out of Old Paddock Bend during the 2 hour Britcar race held at Castle Combe in 2011.

The #58 built is around an Elise 135R chassis with 220 hp Honda K 20 Civic Type R motor, which has since been upgraded to produce 250 hp and a Series 1 Exige body.

Steve plans to compete in this years Lotus Cup UK series this season, still sharing the Guglielmi Motorsport Lotus Exige with John Mileham, with whom he came 4th Overall and 1st Open Class in the opening round at Snetterton in April.

My thanks to Steve Guglielmi for sharing the details about his car.

Multi Purpose Vehicle – Volvo 240 Tørslanda

The Volvo 200 series launched in 1974 was a significant update of the 140 series which is outwardly easily identifiable by federal spec railway sleeper like low impact bumpers that gave the vehicle all the style, despite the best efforts of Jan Wilsgard, of a house brick.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

From 1974 – 1993 the 200 series came with a variety of straight 4 engines, some with turbo chargers, Peugeot Renault Volvo, PRV, aluminium V6’s and straight 5 cylinder or 6 cylinder diesels sourced from the Volkswagen.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

Over the 19 year production run there were numerous stylistic updates which softened the more extreme features of the early 200 series, it was never considered a particularly good looking car but it’s robustness and average 19 year longevity did lend the 200 series a certain status cache somewhere between a Range Rover and a multi purpose vehicle, MPV, Mini Van, the latter which first appeared as the 200 series production was being wound up.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

The 1993 Tørslanda special edition, named after the Swedish factory that built them, was a back to basics estate station wagon model, allegedly designed to cope with harsh Scandinavian winters.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

It featured, by then already retro, manual mirrors, door locks and windows front & rear, plastic trim in place of chrome which fairs badly in snow, heated seats, power steering, full length body stripes and BBS style alloy wheels.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

The 200 series estates / station wagons, which accounted for a third of the 2.8 million units produced in Sweden, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Italy and Malasia, were particularly popular with those needing a large cargo area, the 41 cubic feet cargo area could carry large pieces of furniture, cookers, fridges, washing machines or hay bales and was often supplied with dealer fitted rear facing seats that could accommodate two small children. These cars are still popular with trades people in Europe today.

Volvo 240 Tørslanda

Whilst outright performance was rarely top of the list of a typical 200 series customers desires, Volvo did support the development of a turbocharged two door model that allowed Gianfranco Brancatelli and Thomas Lindström driving for the Eggenberger Motorsport team to share the 1985 European Touring Car Championship.
