Maserati Looks – Dargue MG Magnette

Tom Dargue was an amateur racing driver who’s career spanned from at least 1937 when he raced a Fraser Nash BMW at Donington Park where he came second, until 1955 when he raced today’s featured car, known then as an MG TD Special, of his own design at Silverstone in the AMOC David Brown Cup a relay handicap race in which he finished 3rd overall and 1st in the Relay.

By at least 1949 Tom appears to have switched to racing MG’s and MG powered machines racing an unspecified MG to 3rd at Goodwood in 1949 a feat repeated in 1950 when he raced one of only 7 MG NE racing models built in 1934.

For 1951 Tom built his own car with a tube frame chassis apparently with help from well known MG Tuner and racer Bill Lester. In it’s original specification the car was fitted with a rudimentary two seater body with a signature Ferrari like chip cutter grill and cycle mudguards.

The MG TD Special was powered by a prewar 1100cc supercharged motor, possibly a 6 cylinder similar to that found in a K3 Magnette and various parts more commonly found on MG Y types.

Tom’s debut in the car at Goodwood in 1951 netted another 3rd place finish but in 1952 he found his way to victory lane at Snetterton and Silverstone in between many podium finishes. Success at Silverstone was repeated in 1953 and the cars final victory was in the September 1953 National Handicap race at Goodwood.

During the winter of 1953/54 TD Special was overhauled with the super charged pre WW2 motor being replaced with a contemporary 4 cylinder MG 1500 cc / 91.5 cui XPAG motor of the type used to power the MG TF 1500.

The original two seat cycle wing body found it’s way on to another special which Tom splashed out a rumoured £400 on the aluminium body seen on the car today which resembles a Maserati A6GCS. I would not mind betting that this body came from Williams & Pritchard who like Tom Dargue were based in North London, but that is idle speculation on my part.

Tom raced his 115 mph rebodied car still known as an MG TD Special through to 1955 but was losing ground particularly to Coventry Climax powered Lotus models.

Department of Transport records tell us the registration number came from an MG Magnette first registered on Valentines day 1935.

Current owner Chris Pamplin bought the car in 1967 and is seen driving it at last years 5th Tony Marsh Memorial Weekend run at Gurston Down.

Hands Up ! – MG KN Univesity Motors Speed Model Magnette #KN 0440

Every once in a while I learn something quite shocking, namely how easy it is to deceive myself into thinking I know something only to find with hind sight that I know nothing at all. Today I am sticking both hands up high in the air and admitting I was wrong, quite wrong and I hope you will accept my humble apologies for any confusion caused.

The instance occurred a couple of days ago when I was trying to identify some MG’s I found that a vehicle I thought was a K Type was actually an Type NA, then to my horror I found out that a Type NA that I wrote a blog about some months ago turns out to be one of 200 type KN’s and a University Motors Speed Model Magnette to boot, that is the car I am featuring today which I incorrectly identified in a September blog as a Type NA.

The MG KN was a factory built car featuring a K type saloon body and chassis but with a larger 1271 cc motor from the later MG N type.

Today’s featured car which was seen at Brooklands last year is a variation of the factory built saloon featuring the K type chassis and K1 4 seat tourer body.

These cars were assembled and sold by Univesity Motors, the main dealer in South East England as the University Motors Speed Model Magnette.

The enlarged motor aside there are few differences between the original K1 tourer and the University Motors Speed Model Magnette apart from the headlight mountings and some interior trim details.

In all 171 K1 saloon and four seat tourers were built while 201 KN Saloon’s and University Motors Speed Model Magnettes were built between 1934 and 1936.

International Favorite – MG Magnette ZB

There are six MG’s models in three model groups which have had been marketed with Magnette name :- the K and N types built from 1932 to 1936, the Wolseley based ZA and ZB types built from 1953 to 1958 and the BMC Farina bodied Mark III and Mark IV built from 1959 to 1968.

Today’s 1957 Magnette ZB, seen earlier this year at the 33rd Bristol Classic Car Show, is the fourth iteration based on the Wolseley 15/50 built from 1956 to 1958.

The Magnette ZA was launched in 1953 with a cut down body similar to the Wolseley 14/40 launched earlier the same year. The only interchangeable panels between the two models, and those of the later ZB, launched in 1956 and Wolseley 15/50 are the front doors, roof and boot lid.

Gerald Palmer was responsible for the detail differences between the ZA and Wolseley 14/40. The ZA would became the first unitary monocoque constructed MG without a separate chassis.

The ZB, seen here, features a 64 hp motor, up from 60 hp on the ZA, with a bigger carburetor and higher compression ratio than the original British Motor Corporation (BMC) B- Series motor used for the ZA, was capable of 86 mph with a rest to 60 mph time of 18.5 seconds.

With advertising advertising benefits like “Spots-car Performance, Family-car Comfort, Small-car Economy” and a strap line that ran “Style and luxury combined with the nimble roadability that has made the MG and international favorite” the low slung ZB outsold the Wolseley 15/50 BMC stable mate by 3 to 2 with 18,524 being built from 1956 to 1958.
