Push Button Door Handle – Ford Custom Deluxe Station Wagon

By 1950 American automotive innovation was gathering pace, for 1949 Ford introduced independent coil sprung front suspension to the Ford Custom Deluxe replacing the transverse leaf spring that had been around since at least the Model T.

For 1950 the Custom Deluxe motors received a new camshaft, timing gear and three blade cooling fan, these improvements did not noticeably improve the performance of the 100 hp L head V8 with three speed transmission and overdrive for high speed cruising.

A torsion bar was added to the front suspension and the steering linkage was improved to give “finger tip” control, though this was not power assisted.

Ford started more attention to the smaller details of the 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe introducing push button door handles with rotary latches, while economies were made within with only the drivers seat covered in leather while the rest were clad in vinyl.

The top of the range Ford Custom Deluxe woodie station wagon cost $2,107 new, this one, a former resident of Dana Point, CA, seen at Bonham’s auction at Goodwood Revival a couple of years ago was expected to fetch between £28,000 and £32,000.

Alf’s Shot – Walker Climax

When Stirling Moss won the 1958 Argentinian Grand Prix driving an underpowered Cooper Climax T43 he became the first man to win a Formula One Championship race driving a rear engined car and also the first man to win such a race in a privately entered car for wealthy Walkers Whiskey heir Rob Walker. At the following championship race Maurice Trintignant won for the second time at Monaco driving Walkers Cooper Climax T45.

Walker, a former racer, had promised his wife he would no longer race when he married in 1940 and after the 39/45 war he became a well respected entrant of all manner of cars starting with a Formula 2 Connaught for Tony Rolt in 1953 going on to include; a Lotus 18, the Ferguson P99 and a couple of Lotus 49’s, one of which became the last privately entered car to win a Formula One Championship race at Brand Hatch in 1968 with Jo Siffert at the wheel.

From 1971 to 1973 Rob joined forces with John Surtees, the following year he supporting a third Yardley sponsored McLaren for former Surtees Driver Mike Hailwood with his last financial involvement being in 1974 when he teamed up with Harry Stiller to enter a Hesketh for future, 1980, Formula One Champion Alan Jones, after which he continued as a time keeper for a number of teams.

1959 Stirling won two more championship races driving a Rob Cooper Climax T51 which was wrenched by chief mechanic Alf Francis with whom Stirling had worked through most of the 1950’s starting when Alf was working for HWM.

Alf Francis managed to persuade Moss and Rob Walker, who paid the bills, to let him have a shot at designing a Formula One car for the 1960 season. By all accounts out of loyalty they agreed and Alf working with former Ferrari and Maserati chassis designer Valerio Colotti, who had gone into business under the Studio Tecnica Meccanica, abbreviated to Tec Mec, name, came up with today’s featured Climax powered car

Stirling did test the car, but found it not to his liking so Moss and Walker opted to lease a Lotus 18 with which they won four races over the next two years with Stirling finishing 3rd in the championship in ’60 and ’61.

Alf Francis had worked closely with Colotti when Moss bought a Maserati 250F in 1954 and went on to found Colotti Francis Systems. Alf Francis was later responsible for the Derrington Francis with engine tuner Vic Derrington. The ATS powered Derrington Francis made one appearance before Dan Gurney tested the car, after he had damaged it the Derrington Francis team folded.

Stirling Moss observed that his long serving mechanic Alf was like a good PA who thinks they can run the company and that when they set up they fail.

Although the Walker Climax never raced in period it has regularly appeared in historic events driven by owner Richard Parnell. Note Colotti’s involvement sometimes sees the car referred to as the Walker Climax Tec Mec Tipo 10.

Pillow Talk – MG TF 1500

Billed as a “sexcapade” about “what goes on when the lights go out” the 1959 film Pillow Talk stared Rock Hudson and Doris Day.

The plot centres on the romance between neighbours Brad Allen played by Rock and career girl Jan Marrow played by Doris who share an old school telephone line, a concept probably long since phased out. At the beginning of the film the son of a client of Jan’s offers her a lift home in his MG TF 1500, fitted with optional wire wheels. On the way home the couple stop for a drink and the client’s son gets too drunk to drive when in steps Brad.

Apparently watching big Rock Hudson climbing in and out of the little MG is worth the price of admission alone, the car does not feature in the trailer but you can get the gist of the film on this link.

The MG TF was launched in 1953 as a stop gap between the square rigger T series, which traced it’s ancestry back to the 1936 MG TA, and the MG A. The management of the British Motor Corporation, BMC, did not want the MG-A to be launched at the same time as the Austin Healey 100.

The TF 1500 was first seen in 1954 with a 63 hp motor up from the 57hp on the original TF. 3,400 MG TF 1500’s were built before production switched to the MG A in 1955.

Oblique Mounted Engine – Lotus 16

The Lotus 16 was Colin Chapmans second single seat / open wheel design built for the 1958 season with lessons learned from the Lotus 12.

Unlike the 12 which had an offset motor fitted so that the driver could sit next to instead of on top of the prop shaft running to the rear of the car, the Lotus 16 has an obliquely mounted motor running right side front to left side rear which made a big difference to the way the car handled.

The Lotus 16 did not prove particularly successful with Graham Hill scoring a best 6th place in the 1958 Italian Grand Prix. Though it should be noted the cars motors were giving away 500cc / 30.5 cui to their rivals. Lotus persevered with the 16 the following season, now with full size 2.5 litre / 152.5 cui Coventry Climax motors with Innes Ireland scoring 4th and 5th place finishes in the Dutch and Portugese Grand Prix respectively.

For 1960 the Lotus 18, with it’s motor in the back replaced the 16 but the 16’s were used on four further occasions with out any further success. Bruce Halford who made an ill feted start in the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix driving a private John Fisher entered Lotus 16, bought a similar model in the mid 1970’s and turned it into a regular winner of historic events.

Jochuln Folch-Rusinol can be seen in the #12 above overtaking the 1959 Technica Mechanica Maserati of Tony Wood at the Goodwood Revival. These two cars along with the 1959 Ferrari 246 Dino represented the pinnacle of front engined Grand Prix racing cars that were comprehensively beaten and superseded by the rear engined Coopers in 1959 and 1960 when Lotus joined the rear engined revolution with the Lotus 18.

Abbotts Body – Ford Zephyr 6 Farnham

Last week I had a look at the remains of the 1953 Ford Zephyr 6 that won the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally, today’s car is a 1957 Zephyr 6 with estate / station wagon coach work by Abbots of Farnham, seen here at the Goodwood Revival.

Between 1951 and 1956 148,629 Zephyr 6 saloon /sedan models were built along with 4048 convertibles with body work made by Carbodies these days called London Taxis International a company best known for making most of London’s black cabs.

To satisfy the demand for Zephyr 6 customers wanting an estate or station wagon Ford did a deal with Abbots of Farnham who converted saloons supplied by Ford into estates which were sold as Farnhams.

It is not known how many Zephyr 6 Farnhams were built but production at the Abbotts works was sufficient for Bristol to move the relatively low volume production of the 405 drop head bodies from Abbotts to Tickfords in Newport Pagnell.
