In 1953 Junior made one NASCAR Grand National start at Darlington in an Oldsmobile which he crashed but still took home $110. By 1963 when today’s featured Chevrolet Impala SS was built Junior had won 27 top tier NASCAR Grand National races and his end of season ranking’s had already peaked with two sixth places in points in 1955 and 1961.

Junior Drove the Ray Fox owned #3 Holly Farms Chevrolet Impala SS in 32 of the 55 Grand National races run in the 1963 season and won seven of them which included his Duel qualifying race at Daytona Superspeedway, Hillsboro, two wins at Hickory which was still a dirt track, Atlanta, and Charlotte. By the end of his career only one driver had more race wins than Junior, three time champion Lee Petty had 54 race wins, and Junior was level with two time champ Ned Jarrett on 50 race wins.

Before hanging up his helmet for good at the end of 1966 Junior brought his own team to NASCAR’s top Grand National tier in 1965 entering 36 races of the 55 races and winning 13 of them to finish 12th in the final championship standings.

After a short seven race schedule in 1966 Junior focused on running his cars for other drivers which most notably included the three consecutive championship winning seasons with Cale Yarborough from 1975 to 1977 and then three more championship winning seasons with Darrell “Jaws” Waltrip in 1981, ’82 and ’85.

Junior retired from the sport in 1995 by which time his teams had clocked up 132 NASCAR race wins still only bettered by Hendrick Motorsports on 231 top tier NASCAR race victories and Petty Enterprises with 268 top tier NASCAR race victories.

In retirement Junior has kept busy running Junior Johnson Pork Skins Inc and Piedmont Distillers which produce batches of legal Midnight Moon described as “Smoother than vodka. Better than whiskey. Best shine ever.”

Magna Detailing – Maki F101

When the Maki F101 was announced in 1974 my first reactions were similar to the announcement of the Eifelland two years earlier, such unfettered enthusiasm for something so different from anything else of course does not always pay dividends as Lotus were two find out with their ultra thin Lotus 76 in the same year.

Maki F101, Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Maki project was founded by Kenji Mimura who is credited with designing the Ford Cosworth DFV powered car with Masao Ono. The details of some of the features are at once both like something out of a Magna Comic and extremely futuristic, bearing in mind that this was a time when the biggest selling road cars like the Ford Cortina and Morris Marina were little more than 3 boxes with wheels on.

Maki F101, Goodwood Festival of Speed

By the time the F101 now in B Spec made it’s dedut with Howden Ganley driving at the 1974 British Grand Prix it had already shed it’s unique body work for something rather more conservative.

Howden, seen at the wheel above during at the Gooodwood Festival of Speed, while not driving the slowest car in practice failed to qualify for the British Grand Prix.

Maki F101, Goodwood Festival of Speed

At the German Grand Prix disaster struck when the during the first day of practice the rear suspension failed sending Howden into the crash barriers which ripped the front of the car off.

Maki F101, Goodwood Festival of Speed

Amazingly Howden stepped out of the wreckage unaided but his ankles were seriously damaged and this was to be the end of his Formula One career.

Maki F101, Howden Ganley, Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Maki F101 did not appear again in 1974 but a C variant did appear with a new chassis in 1975, the story of which will have to wait for a future edition.

Howden Ganley recovered from his injuries and went on to found a successful racing car manufacturer with fellow F1 refugee Tim Schenken called Tiga.

Identificaion Variable – Nissan IDx Nismo

The Nissan IDx Freeflow and Nismo concept cars were first seen in 2013 hark back to the Datsun 510/Bluebird/1600 models built from 1968 to 1973.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

The performance IDx NISMO variant seen here at Goodwood Festival of Speed is seen as a competitor to the similarly rear wheel drive Hyundai Genesis coupé, Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 models.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

If the IDx Nismo goes into production it is believed that it will be powered by a 200hp turbocharged motor, similar to that found in the Juke Nismo.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

Unfortunately the bad boy side pipes will probably not make it into production.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

So far only a Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) has been seen in the two IDx concepts.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

It is believed the IDx Nismo will have a top speed of 130mph and will reach 60mph from rest in 7 seconds.

Nissan IDx Nismo, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

No date has been given for the IDx to go into production, but it is believed that it may replace it could replace either the Quest, Xterra, Cube or Juke should any of these models be discontinued.

Thanks for joining me on the “Identity Variable” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow for Maserati Monday. Don’t forget to come back now !

Aerodynamic Lift – Bugatti Type 32 #????

The 1923 French Grand Prix at Tours is usually remembered as the occaison on which a rare British 1-2 victory was recorded for the manufacturer Sunbeam for whom Sir Henry O’Neil de Hane Segrave was at the wheel of the winning car.

The race should also be remembered for two of the strangest designs ever to take part in Grand Prix racing namely the Type 32 Bugatti featured today and the even more outlandish Voisin Laboratoire.

Bugatti Type 32, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

The streamlined bodywork of the Type 32 had one major draw back, it created lift which made the short wheel based 2 litre / 122 cui 8 cylinder car exceptionally difficult to handle in the corners.

Bugatti took five Type 32 cars to the 1923 French Grand Prix Ernest Freidrich scored the teams best result 3rd behind Seagrave and Albert Divo in the second Sunbeam, André Lefebvre was the first Voisin home in fifth place behind Kenelm Lee Guinness in a third Sunbeam.

Bugatti Type 32, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

The Musée de l’Auto which own’s today’s featured car seen at Goodwood Festival of speed believe they own chassis #4057 which was driven Pierre Marco and retired on the fourth laps of the 1923 French Grand Prix with engine problems.

However Bugatti expert Pierre Dumont is convinced this car is actually #4061 which is considered to be the original prototype taken along as a spare to the 1923 French Grand Prix. Spaniard Pierre de Vizcaya took over #4061 for the race after crashing his designated car #4058 during practice.

Bugatti Type 32, Goodwood Festival of Speed,

The unfortunate Pierre proceeded to crash #4061 on the opening lap of the 1923 French Grand Prix. Bugatti never officially raced the type 32 again, but it is believed that after being sold #4061 was driven by Pierre to a speed record at Arpajon in 1924.

’56 Italian Hillclimb Champion – Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé #2148

Last in the current series of Maserati A6G/54 posts is one of twenty Zagato Coupé bodied models chassis #2148.

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

The 21 Zagato bodied A6G/54’s are lighter than most of the other 39 A6G/54’s because their bodies are crafted from aluminium. This made #2148 and it’s Zagato siblings eminently suitable for use in competition.

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

It is believed this car once belonged to Italian racing driver Adolfo Tedeschi who is thought to have used #2148 to secure the 1956 Italian under 2 litre hillclimb championship.

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

Thereafter #2148 spent some time in the USA before passing into the hands of Peter Kaus and his Bianco Collection which included several vehicles that have featured in GALPOT blogs including several other Maseratis.

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

Looking at this side vent trim I was struck by it’s similarity to the DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc) stripes on the Dale Earnhardt Jr Limited Edition Chevrolet Impala, I wonder if Dale Earnhardt was a fan of the Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé ?

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

After a spell in France #2148 has passed through the hands of at least one other German before finding it’s way into the hands of current owner Klaus Busch.

Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Coupé, Cartier Style Et Luxe, Goodwood Festival of Speed

The most recent record of an A6G/54 Zagato sale by auction I could find was in 2010 for a slightly less aggressively styled Berlinetta variant which fetched over US$ 1.5 million.

Thanks for joining me on this “’56 Italian Hillclimb Champion” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again for a look at a Bugatti tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !

Quick Transport and Transporter – Mercedes Benz Rennwagen Schnelltransporter and 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

In 1954 the Mercedes Benz Rennabteilng returned to Grand Prix racing and equiped themselves with a special transporter that was capable of 105 mph.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Most racing car transporters at the time were woefully underpowered and would have struggled to reach 60 mph.

This is a recreation of the original Schnell Tranporter fitted with the correct type 200 hp 3 litre / 183 cui straight six motor as found in the 300 SL Gullwing Coupés.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Mounting the cab ahead of the motor meant the frontal area of the vehicle was reduced, which aided top speed.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Some of the features of the under chassis design would not look out of place on a 21st century Le Mans Prototype (LMP) racing car.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

I have not seen any contemporary evidence showing that Mercedes Benz advertised the original vehicles top speed on the rear wings / fenders.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Sitting on the back of the Rennwagen Schnell Transporter at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed was a Gullwing Mercedes Benz, but this is not a regular 300 SL Gullwing.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Beneath the 300 SL Gullwing bodywork sits a 1955 300 SLR Roadster chassis complete with competition spec 3 litre fuel injected 8 cylinder motor in place of usual 300 SL six cylinder motor.

Mercedes Benz, Rennwagen Schnelltransporter, 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

Known as the Uhlenhaut Coupé this was a vehicle devised by Rudolf Uhlenhaut as a 1956 racing prototype. However after Mercedes Benz withdrew from racing activities in Europe at the end of 1955 one of the two Uhlenhaut Coupés was fitted with a silencer the size of a suit case in order not to breach the peace and used by Rudolf as his daily driver.

Thanks for joining me on this “Quick Transport and Transporter” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I’ll be looking at a classic DeSoto. Don’t forget to come back now !

Pulling The Plug – Peugeot 908 HYbrid4

In 2007 Peugeot started a A V12 Turbo Diesel Prototype Sports Car programme that produced victory at Le Mans over the hitherto dominant Audi Team in 2009.

For 2011 new regulations saw the introduction of a smaller V8 powered turbo diesel 908 Prototype Turbo Diesel racer which scored outright wins at Spa, Imola, Silverstone, Road Atlanta and Zhuhai

Peugeot 908 HYbrid4, Goodwood Festival of Speed

As early as 2008 Peugeot had shown a V12 turbo diesel powered hybrid racer, but it was not until 2011, after the HYbrid4 had been taken to the Geneva Motor Show, that development of the V8 turbo diesel powered HYbrid4 started to gather momentum with a view to racing in 2012.

Peugeot 908 HYbrid4, Goodwood Festival of Speed

In addition to it’s traditional diesel fueled motor the Hybrid4 was fitted with a 60 kw kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) which stores kinetic energy generated under braking in Li-ion battery cells which was used to power electric motors driving the rear wheels under acceleration.

The Peugeot KERS system is said to have developed and additional 80hp at the mandated speed limit with out aid from the diesel motor.

Towards the end of 2011 Peugeot gave the HYbrid4 a systems test at Estoril,

Peugeot 908 HYbrid4, Goodwood Festival of Speed

In 2012 while the Peugeot team was preparing to test the new car at Sebring Peugeot head office announced poor financial circumstances meant that the manufacturer had no option but to withdraw from Protoype Sports Car racing effective immediately, and so the HYbrid4 never turned a wheel in competition.

Thanks for joining me on this “Pulling The Plug” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres”, I hope you will join me again tomorrow for a look at another car that did not quite make it to Le Mans. Don’t forget to come back now !
