Seven Figure Anonymous Commission – Ferrari F12 TRS

I can’t imagine the wealth required to even think about approaching Ferrari and Pinninfarina to comission a one off car but it must be well into the billions before one can afford a vehicle that is going to cost something north of seven figures like today’s anonymously commissioned Ferrari F12 TRS.

The base vehicle of this commision is a £239,000 Ferrari F12berlinetta.

The targa top body created by Flavio Manzoni is otherwise all new with a nod to the 1961 Le Mans winning Ferrari 250 TRI/61 in the treatment of the windscreen and side window’s.

Like wise the see through bubble over the 730hp motor complete with red cam covers is a nod to Ferrari’s successful sports racing cars of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

It remains to be seen if the owner will reveal him or herself, but in the meantime one can’t help but wonder how many similar projects never come to public attention.

Tee, Targa or TT – Ferrari California T

The T in the new 2+2 Ferrari California T, launched earlier this year, stands for neither the golf tee, nor Targa top but for turbocharged which further investigation leads to the fact that the California T is in fact powered by a twin turbocharged motor, a technology last used by Ferrari on the F40.

The new 552hp Califonia T biturbo motor has a smaller 3.9 litre / 235 cui motor that produces 70 hp more than the original normally aspirated California V8, is 15% more fuel efficient, but still in the Rolls Royce league, and produces 15% less emissions.

The convertible hard top has new subtlety more aggressive panels from Pinninfarina all round and some interior features derived from the F12berlinetta.

The California T is the first Ferrari to be fitted with the iOS 7.1 operating system compatible Apple CarPlay meaning ones Apple devices can be operated by Ferrari’s native control systems.

The 552hp twin turbo motor will push the California t from rest to 62.5mph in 3.6 seconds and on to a quoted top speed of 196 mph.

Ferraris At The Castle – Sherborne Castle

A couple of weeks ago David Roots kindly invited me to join him at last weekends Classics at the Castle in Sherborne and today’s post is dedicated to a hand full of the many Ferrari’s present.

While waiting to meet David I heard the unmistakeable wail of a highly tuned V12 approaching and just had time to whip out my camera to capture this ’04, as listed by the DVLA, Ferrari Enzo. Enzo aficionado’s will of course know only one Enzo, the 400th and final one, was built in ’04 and that red car was donated to the Vatican for a charity auction, which means this car imported into the UK in 2004 must have been built in ’02 or ’03.

Not far behind the Enzo came this ’03 Ferrari 360 Spider, it was a day approaching 20 degrees centigrade when this photo was taken, one wonders how much heat the owner needs before being persuaded to lower the roof !

Next a couple of Maranello Yellow Spiders came by with their roofs down an F430 leading a 360.

Oldest of the Ferrari’s I saw present was this 1961 Ferrari 250 GT/E chassis #2245GT.

With 50hp more than the Enzo and keeping things bang up to date was this 2014 F12berlinetta.

The F40 “MAD40F” is officially registered at the DVLA with a spelling mistake, type the registration number and select Ferrari from the drop down menu on this linked website and you will get no further details, but select “Other” from the drop down menu and type in “Ferari”, and you will see this is a 1991 model.

730hp Grand Tourer – Ferrari F12berlinetta

In 2012 Ferrari announced it’s new Pininfarina styled 730hp F12berlinetta would replace the 612hp Ferrari 599 which had been in production since 2006.

The 730hp V12 motor is a tuned version of that seen in the 650hp Ferrari FF first seen in 2011 as is the 7 speed dual-clutch automated semi-automatic transmission which can also be found in the California, 458 Italia and LaFerrari models.

The F12berlinetta’s alloy chassis developed with Scaglietti is said to be stiffer and and lighter than that of the 599 which it replaces, the center of gravity has also been lowered and the finished car has a 46% front, 54% rear weight distribution.

Among the interesting novelties fitted to the F12berlinetta are active brake cooling ducts which open only when the brakes are hot, this feature reduces the cars overall aerodynamic drag during the course of a journey. The cars drag coefficient is said to be 0.299.

When lapping the Ferrari Fiorano test circuit the F12berlinetta is said to be 3.5 seconds faster than the 599 GTB, and two seconds faster than the Enzo, 458 Italia and 430 Scuderia.

I still have not established if the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso chassis #4237 like the one above is actually missing or not, if anyone has any information about #4237 please do not hesitate to chime in below.

If stealth is your rocks your boat I guess matt black is the way to go, but I’m not sure I could ever get used to it, matt black to me looks like the new primer, something unfinished or a work in progress which is I am sure the last thing I’d think of in the event I ever bought a Ferrari 458 Italia Coupé.

Despite being launched last year to replace the Ferrari 599, I still have not come across a Ferrari F12berlinetta like the one above, I must get round to making an appointment with my local stockist.

The Great Ferraris – The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering

A couple of weeks ago Geoffrey Horton took part in The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering Concours d’Elegance, here are a few pictures of The Great Ferraris Geoffrey has kindly shared with us.

Ferrari 166 Inter, The Great Ferraris, The Quail

Among the oldest of the Ferraris present was chassis #043S a 1950 Ferrari 166 Inter Touring Coupé of which 37 were built between 1948 and 1951.

Ferrari 212 Inter, Pininfarina Convertible, The Great Ferraris, The Quail

The Ferrari 212 Inter Pininfarina Convertible above is one of two built for Ferrari to show in the 1952 Auto Salons, chassis #0235EU, above, is left hand drive while the other is right hand drive. Among it’s owners this car counts Tony Parravano and the film director Roberto Rossellini who entered the car in the 1953 Nurburgring sports car race where it finished ninth driven by journalist Maurice Gatsonides and Ricardo Vignolo.

Up for auction was the 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale chassis #0313EU which appeared at the 1954 New York Auto Show. The car fetched US$ 2.8 million / £1.8, possibly a bargain for what many consider one of the most attractive Ferrari’s ever built.

Dick Morgensen bought this Ferrari 250 TR chassis #0756 TR in late 1958 and raced it to victory lane on at least eight occasions between 1959 and 1960. The car has been owned by it’s present owner Chris Cox from North Carolina since 2008.

Jumping forward to the start of the millenium above is one of 401 Ferrari Enzos built between 2002 and 2004.

Costing a cool US$ 4 million to build is the one off Ferrari P4/5 by Pinninfarina which was built around the last Ferrari Enzo to be produced for James Glickenhaus. Upon taking delivery of the restyled car the owner said “I feel they gave me more than I expected”.

The Ferrari F12berlinetta replaced the Ferrari 599 series last year, it’s 6.2 litre / 382 cui V12 produces 730 hp the same as a 1970 Can Am car !
