Fastest In The Country – Cooper MG #4/4/52

In 1952 MG tuner Lionel Leonard replaced his first Cooper MG registered JOY 500 with a new one, chassis number #4/4/52 registered KOY 500 which is featured today.

Peter Morely, who completed a restoration of the car in 2008 tells me the chassis appears to have much in common with the earliest rear engined Cooper 500 Formula 3 cars and suggests it is likely that it was based on a used chassis. Doug Nye, author of Cooper Cars, kindly informed me that the T series numbering system was applied retrospectively to this era of Cooper, it is accepted in some circles that when Lionel bought both JOY 500 and KOY 500, in kit form, that they were both in T14 spec although Cooper would have referred to them simply as Cooper MG’s.

The MG XPAG motor, bored out to 1,467cc @ 91 cui, drives the rear wheels through an MG gearbox both of which would have been sourced from the contemporaneous MG TC / TD/ Y series models. Lionel drove KOY 500 to a second place finish on it’s debut at Snetterton in May 1952 and finished the season with a win at RAF Tarrant Rushton in Dorset.

Bristol’s car dealing Horace ‘the Gonzalez of the West Country’ Gould bought KOY 500 for the 1953 season and by fitting it with Mk 1 Cooper Bristol suspension and twin leading edge brake shoes brought the car up to what in some circles is regarded as T21 specification, although again this designation is entirely retrospective. Highlights of Horace’s season included a win in the Queensferry Sprint and 2nd place finish in the Sheena Gray Trophy race at Charterhall.

According to Roger Clark Horace advertised #4/4/52 in Autosport as “THE FASTEST COOPER MG IN THE COUNTRY”. Brian Naylor bought the car and shared #4/4/52 with Ian Davidson in 1954. Brian drove in most events recording a win at Snetterton and another at Silverstone, while Ian drove the car in just four events and podiumed in each with wins at the Barbon Hillclimb and Croft.

When the restoration of #4/4/52 was completed in 2008 the car was taken to Monaco and competed in the historic meeting in which it finished 6th. KOY 500 is seen in these photo’s at last years Autumn Classic at Castle Combe with John Paul Mason at the wheel.

Roger Clark discerned from the much missed David McKinney’s note books that “approximately 20 Cooper MG kits were sold”.

Crown Gabelstapler – Opel Omega GSi 3000 24V

A couple of months ago I looked at a Mello Yellow Vauxhall Senator today’s featured tribute car is a 1990 Opel Omega 24V the German branded first generation version of the Mello Yellow Senator.

Manufactured from 1986 to 1993 the first generation Opel Senator was voted European Car Of The Year in 1987.

Opel had a presence in the 1990 German Touring Car Championship (DTM) with their entries supported by Crown Forklift Trucks and alloy wheel manufacturer ATS, Klaus Niedwiedz, seen above at the Norisring, and Markus Oestereich were the teams drivers, but they achieved little by way of success, not even making the top 20 in points standings, during a season dominated by the Audi V8 quattro’s with the BMW’s M3’s their closest challengers.

The 201hp Opel Omega GSi 3000 24V used as the basis for today’s tribute car has a number of modifications including a Lotus Carlton / Senator exhaust with cast chromed twin tail pipes !

50 mpg DIY Sportscar – Liege

In the late 1980’s Peter Leigh Davis set out to design a sporting all rounder which could be driven to work and used for competition at the weekends in much the same way as early Allard, Buckler, Dellow and Lotus cars to name but a few.

The aluminium motor and gearbox for the Liege were taken from a Reliant Robin and a variety of back axles were tried before settling on a Bedford/Suzuki unit from an ultra light commercial van.

To prove his creation’s reliability Peter took the prototype on a 6500 mile reconnaissance trip for the Liege-Agadir-Liege Endurance Trial to the edge of the Sahara desert. The car carried two people tools and camping gear and ran faultlessly while averaging 50 mpg.

In all 60 Liege kits were built after plans to build a turn key car with Reliant fell through, 45 of these vehicles are thought to be on the road some running twin carbs or superchargers to boost the power while yet more have been fitted with Honda Fireblade, Fiat Fire and various Suzuki motors.

The prototype Liege won a bronze medal on the 1995 Lands End Trial and won the 2 lire class of Le Jog the same year.

The car seen here at last years Castle Combe Autumn Classic is listed as manufactured in 1989 and completed in 2005 with the Reliant power train and Suzuki back axle.

Great Western Sprint – Castle Combe

On Saturday I got up at some unseemly hour and braved rain, hail and sunshine on my way over to Castle Combe for the Williams Automobiles Motorsport Specialists Great Western Sprint organised by the Bristol Motor Club.

For my sins I volunteered to be a marshal and found myself rather busier than expected by being assigned the paddock gate where my duties included checking competitors competition numbers were visible and that they were wearing mandatory seat belts, gloves and helmet, I was also instructed to make sure each car that passed me had the correct scrutineering sticker attached.

Before the action started and during the lunch break I’m managed to take a few snaps, above David Jameson’s 1968 Volvo Amazon basks in the mid day sun.

Looking mean at dawn above is Neville Breach’s 1972 Sunbeam Avenger Tiger Mk II which unfortunately retired early when the motor started seizing up.

Bristol Pegasus Motor Club’s Pete Goodman only took delivery of his Ford Fiesta ST a couple of weeks ago, but had already put sufficient miles on it for a first service before Saturday, he told me the car was still so new he was circumspect of “really thrashing it”.

Among the open wheelers present was the Formula Ford spec 1980 Zeus ZR 163 shared by Russell and Mark Haynes. Up close the body work bears some resemblance to the 1981 Lotus 88. Little remembered Zeus fact; well known scribe for Motoring News, Autosport and more recently MotorSport, Simon Arron once drove a Zeus into the sleepers at Silverstone.

The 1993 Ralt RT37 was originally built for 2 litre / 122 cui Formula 3 racing, Peter Howgate’s example above is fitted with a 3.2 litre / 195 cui Judd V8.

Lola Tegra T90/50, Great Western Sprint, Castle Combe

Slightly older is the 1990 Lola Tegra T90/50 built for the 3 litre / 183 cui Formula 3000 series. The car shared by Graham Porret and Terry Holmes is now fitted with a 3.5 litre / 213 cui V8. On it’s last run the electrics cut out leaving Terry Holmes stranded in gear just short of the finish line.

Running a top sprint car is fraught with difficulties if the motor gets too warm the electronics take over and cut the motor and will not let it start again until the engine has dropped well below operating temperature, if the engine temperature gets too low damage is guaranteed when the motor is run at maximum revs hence Terry Graves Gould GR55 has a blanket wrapped over it in the near freezing conditions as he waited to go out in the top twelve run offs. Terry who has just acquired this car, still fitted with short hill climb gear ratio’s finished the day with a respectable if breathless 8th fastest time.

With the cars all assembled for the top 12 run offs my enjoyable if a little hectic contribution to the day was over and I had time to watch some of the track action from the pit wall. Above Craig Sampson in the unusual if not unique Reynard DB Mk1 managed forth fastest time while his partner driver Mark Smith recorded the 3rd fastest time of the day.

The top two spots on the ‘podium’ were reserved for the Calder clan Gould GR55 which had made a 15 hour one way trip from Scotland to Castle Combe. Dad Colin is seen above grinding out the fastest time of the day pipping his daughter Heather by just by a smidgeon over a tenth of a second.

Below father and daughter give each other a hug after the final run’s, to make up for Heather’s disappointment she at least knew the 15 hour journey would be marginally more tolerable than if she had not let her father win.

Importing A Ladder – Maserati 250F #2530/32

Somewhere around 1980 Pink Floyd Drummer Nick Mason entered into negotiations to purchase ERA 10B and found that he could only buy the car on condition that he bought a Maserati 250F, today’s featured car, as part of the package.

Nick bought both cars and found that the 250F had a 1957 lightweight chassis which turned out to be #2530 to which people had fitted numerous incorrect parts including a Chevrolet V8.

Nick described the car as a “basket case” and recalls the car being described as a ladder for import purposes.

#2530 was originally fitted with a V12 motor but never raced with it, later in 1958 #2530 was fitted with a six cylinder motor and sent to South America. It appeared in the 1960 Argentinian Grand Prix with the chassis number #2532 where Gino Munaron drove the car to a 13th place finish.

To keep you on your toes Antonio Creus drove another 250F in the 1960 Argetinian Grand Prix this was chassis #2526 which carried the #2530 ID tag ! Antonio retired from with driver fatigue.

Towards the end of 1960 Brazilian Rugeno Peruzzi bought the car and between 1962/64, according to David McKinney’s Maserati 250F, it appears to have been raced by Camillo Cristofaro with a Chevrolet V8 in the engine bay.

Colin Crabbe found the car with out any identity in the early 1970’s and Nick had the frame replaced by a new one to the correct 1957 lightweight specification.

Rob Hall is seen yumping #2530 at Cholmondeley Pageant Of Power at the top of the post while Charles Knill-Jones, a member of the Ten Tenths team which looks after Nick Mason’s many cars, is seen in period attire hustling Nicks 250F around Castle Combe at last years Autumn Classic meeting.

Lightweight – Buckler Daimler DD2

In 1957 Buckler started manufacturing frames for it’s DD2 model like the 1958 example seen here at the Bristol Motor Club’s Family Club Day at Castle Combe.

This was built as a “lightweight” at the Buckler works for Les Hall.

DD2’s were fitted with a variety of motors including Ford, Daimler , MG and in one instance a Vincent V twin from a motorcycle.

It is thought Les Hall’s car originally had a Morris motor fitted.

DD2’s were fitted with a variety of proprietary fiberglass bodies, today’s car is fitted with a Mistral body, others were made by Falcon, Convair and AKS to name a few.

At some point today’s car was acquired by Malcolm Buckler, son of founder Derek, and shipped to the Isle of Isle of Man sans motor on top of a cargo of building stone.

Later the car was acquired by Malcom’s brother in law Kieth Ambrose and his son Simon credited with putting the car back on the road with a Daimler V8.

It is thought that a journalist Mr (Alan ?) Burgess may have been the first person to fit a SP250 Daimler V8 to a DD2, it thought this car might have been used for drag racing, but evidence in the form of a race programme or photographs have yet to surface to confirm this.

Supercharged 100E – Buckler MK 6

With the sales success of his Buckler MK 5 the earliest example of which was manufactured in 1949 Derek Buckler expanded his range by offering a longer wheel base Buckler Mk 6 in 1953 which could be ordered either as a turn key or car sales tax saving self build model.

In kit form complete with tubular frame chassis, supports and fittings, independent front suspension, radiator, petrol tank, remote gear change, special steering and silencer for less than £200 to which could be added the cost of a motor, gearbox, rear axle and wheels which would typically come out of a wrecked donor Ford, along with the price of a home made body.

The earliest known owner of today’s featured 1953 Buckler MK 6 is believed to have been M Bendall who fitted a motor from a Ford 100E Prefect/Anglia a model first seen in 1953.

At some point the power of the motor in the vehicle as seen today was boosted with the aid of a supercharger.

Stan Hibberd owned the car in 1972 and drove it to the, now at least 200 year old, ciderhouse Coronation Tap in Clifton, Bristol for the the first meeting of the Buckler Register.

Although Stan remembered the meeting and the cider, served in half pints, many years later he did not remember any Bucklers being present although contemporary reports are to the contrary.

Stan’s grandson Andrew drove the car at last years Castle Combe Autumn Classic meeting, unfortunately a problem during qualifying meant Andrew did not take the start.
