Formula One Power – Ferrari 342 America Pininfarina Cabriolet #0234AL

In 1950 Ferrari began building a series of 23 340 America’s powered by his 4.1 litre / 250 cui long block V12’s designed by Aurelio Lampredi initially for Ferrari’s 375 Formula One programme.

1952 the 342 America was introduced 5 of which were fitted with an improved version 4.1 litre / 250 cui V12 and one, today’s featured chassis #0234 AL, was fitted with 4.5 litre / 274 cui V12 which technically makes it a 375 but for some reason is known as a 342.

#0234AL has an even chassis number, usually reserved for works team racing cars, as do all the other twenty three 340’s and five 342’s unlike the 11 375 America’s built from 1953 to 1954 which all have the usual odd chassis numbers used for Ferrari road cars.

On the 6th of November 1952, coincidentally sixty three years ago to the day, chassis #0234AL was delivered to Carrozzeria Pininfarina where the Cabriolet body was fitted.

In May 1953 King Leopold III. of Belgium took delivery of the car and is believed to have kept it for only two years before selling it to Garage Francorchamps in Brussels, Belgium.

John Mastroianni of Armonk, NY founder of Auto Torismo Sport now in New Milford Conneticut owned #0234AL from somewhere in the 1960’s to 1998 alongside his 250 GTO and a 500 Superfast and numerous other desirable vehicles mostly of Italian origin.

#0234AL has resided in California since October 1998 and has won numerous awards at Concours d’Elegance events ever since.

Coffee, Croissant & Cars 08/15 – Avenue Drivers Club

On the second Sunday of the month I managed to briefly pop by Queen Square for the Avenue Drivers Club meeting and by 8am the Square was already quite busy.

Among the vehicles present this ’66 Chevrolet Corvette C2 which was imported into the UK earlier this year.

It was great to see Mark Richards Ford Consul 375 back in one piece after an unscheduled ground up restoration has been completed. Mark is planning on offering his services with this car for weddings, ffi please contact Mark on FB or leave a message below.

Nissan Stagea, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

I’m not sure Nissan Stagea’s were ever imported by the manufacturer into the UK, this 1997 example with UV Cut Glass was first registered in the UK in March 2009.

Volkswagen Scirocco, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Another car first registered in this country in 2009 was this Volkswagen Scirocco which I have been watching becoming increasingly “modded” over the last few months as it lives not more than a mile from me, looks like the owner has it fully equipped to take everything including the kitchen sink on holiday with him to the Sweetshop Automotive Summer Showdown in Cheddar on Bank Holiday Monday.

Dodge Dart Swinger, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

From 1970 a Dodge Dart Swinger that is shown as officially being powered by a 5.4 litre / 329 cui V8 which I do not believe was a standard size for this model, 318’s and 340’s being the nearest manufacturer supplied size I could find.

Finally just before I left this cute li’l 2002 Smart Crossblade pulled in, a limited edition model which again I don’t believe was a manufacturer import into the UK even after pop star Robbie Williams bought one.

Ferrari Road Treasures – Blackhawk Museum

A couple of weeks ago Geoffrey Horton kindly asked me what kind of cars I was looking for pictures of and I responded that I was desperately short of Ferrari’s, as you can see from today’s Ferrari blog, and will see in next weeks blog Geoffrey has come up trumps and saved Ferrari Friday single handedly probably up until Christmas. Here is a preview of some of the Ferrari road cars that will feature in the coming weeks.

Ferrari 342 America Vignale Cabriolet, Blackhawk Museum, CA

The Ferrari America series started in 1950 was designed to meet the requirements of Ferrari’s customers who wanted a little more than a racing car adapted for the road. The America cars featured more leg room and head room but were still powered by motors derived from Ferrari’s racing programmes. This 1952 Ferrari 342 America Cabriolet features a unique, as in one of, body by Vignale and is powered by a 230 hp Lamperedi designed V12.

Following the 23 342’s came the Ferrari 375 America with a larger and more powerful Lampredi V12 which produced 300 hp. This 1953 Vignale bodied Coupé is one of two, regular readers may remember reading about the other one nearly a year ago.

Sporting it’s original salmon paintwork and with just over 8000 miles on the clock this unique, one of, 1954 Ghia bodied Coupé sits on a 375 MM chassis designed for racing. It was the last Ferrari chassis to be fitted with Ghia body.

In 1961 the Ferrari 400 Superamerica made it’s debut at the Geneva Motorshow with a downsized 4 litre 244 cui V12 which produced 340 hp. The second series Superamerica’s like the 1964 example seen here was built on a slightly longer chassis. Only 47 Superamerica’s of all types, Coupé, Cabriolet and Spider were built up until 1964.

In 1964 the 500 Superfast Coupé was introduced to replace the America series cars, like the earlier models the Superfast was only built to order and now powered by a 5 litre / 302 cui motor giving 400 hp.
This 1966 example is a series 2 500 Superfast with Pinin Farina Coupé body, the 33rd of 37 Superfasts built up until 1967.

Burgandy & Cream – Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé Pininfarina #0305EU

After a meeting between Batista Farina, in 1961 to become Batista Pininfarina, and Enzo Ferrari at a restaurant in Tortona, a small town halfway between Turin and Modena, Batista drove home an told his son Sergio “From now on you’ll be looking after Ferrari, from A to Z. Design, engineering, technology, construction—the lot!”. Sergia says he was over the moon with happiness and one of the fruits of that conversation is today’s featured Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé chassis #0305EU delivered in late September 1953.

According to the blurb about this car seen at Goodwood, #0305EU was originally commissioned by a friend of Batista Farina called Latino Magnolfi, given the PF job number 12531 chassis #0305EU features unique to the 250 Europa Coupé model 3/4 windows a shorter windscreen and larger grill than the other 250 Europa’s. Magnolfi used to enter the car in Concours d’Elegance events before he sold the car.

The exact history of the #0305EU after the sale is not known to me but it ended up in the USA and after the repair of the 3 litre / 183 cui V12 motor became uneconomic the motor and gearbox was swapped for a Chevrolet V8 and and associated transmission.

In 2006 current owner Jan de Reu acquired the car which has been fully restored to its white wall tyre two tone Burgundy and Cream splendor, with a correct Colombo designed Ferrari V12 motor, by Ferrari Classiche.

As some of my regular readers may remember the Ferrari 250 Europa is closely related to the Ferrari 375 America, the later of which is powered by a larger 4.5 litre 274 cui Aurelio Lambredi designed long block V12.

Needs Must – Ferrari 375 America Vignale Coupé #0327AL

Never wildly keen on selling road cars Enzo Ferrari was persuaded to build a few, which not only helped him defray the costs of developing new technology for his racing programme but also satisfied a demand for his products at near exclusive prices.

The 1953 375 America was his second series of road cars following the 342 America of which only twenty three were built. The 375 was powered by a 300 hp 4522 cc / 275 cui long block V12 similar to that used in the 4.5 litre V12 Ferrari 375 Formula One Car and slightly longer Ferrari 375 Indy Car.

Only 11 Ferrari 375 America’s were built, with a 12th one being converted from 250 Europa spec to 375 America spec by the Ferrari factory in 1955. Regular readers may remember that a Pininfarina bodied 375 America chassis #0319AL was the subject of a GALPOT blog in May last year.

This particular chassis #0372AL is one of just three cars built with Vignale bodies, each of the Vignale bodies has unique features making this one easy to recognise, due to it’s low bumper and recessed headlights, as the second of the three built. This car was displayed at the Geneva and New York automotive shows in 1954 and then sold to Robert C. Wilke, of Milwaukee, WI, USA – President of Leader Cards Inc.

Chinese Whispers – Ferrari 375MM Vignale #0286AM

Today we are looking at a one off Ferrari 375MM Vignale chassis #0286AM, seen here at the recent Phil Hill Tribute at the Peterson Museum, that for 35 years was reported as being buried in a hole in the ground.

The Vignale bodied chassis 0286AM started life as one of four from a total of 10 340 MM’s with a 4.1 litre 250 cui Lamperdi V12. However before #0286AM left the factory it’s motor was upgraded first with a 4.5 litre / 274 cui V12 which had it’s origins in the Ferrari 375 Grand Prix Car, bringing the erstwhile Vignale bodied 340 MM up to 375 MM spec, in fact today’s car is seen as the prototype 375 MM. The motor was then bored out to 4.9 litres / 299 cui to the so called 375 plus spec.

#0286AM appeared at four events in 1953, Luigi Villoresi qualified on pole for a sports car race at Spa but the car was withdrawn before the start due to engine problems. Villoresi set fastest lap in the Circuito di Senigallia Race but again retired with engine problems.

Alberto Ascari and Giuseppe Farina drove #0286AM to victory at the 1953 Nurburgring 1000 kms after the engine had been changed from one of the other team cars before the start of the race. Somewhere around this time #0286AM was scheduled to transfer to the ownership of Tony Parravano however the engine problems at the Nurburgring meant this transaction never took place and Tony was given another 375 MM chassis #0362AM.

US Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti then bought #0286AM painted it black added a full width screen and entered it for himself and Alfonso de Portago in the 1900 mile 1953 Carrera Panamericana where engine problems prevented the car from completing the race. The car was then sold to Carlos Braniff in Mexico City.

Braniff had the car prepared for the 1954 Carrera Panemericana with a standard 4.5 litre / 274 cui motor he had a second spare wheel fitted in the tail and added the distinctive head rest and fin as well as adding cooling vents for the wheels. Carlos drove the car to a second place finish at the The Lone Star National Sports Car Race held at Bergstrom and Phil Hill came second in the Orange Empire National Races held at March AFB prior to the Carrera Panemericana for which Hill was teamed up with Richie Ginther.

Hill & Ginther were in contention for the 1954 Carrera Panemericana win when they ran out of fuel on the 7th of 8 stages, on which they only managed a forth place finish. Hill & Ginther made up for the disappointment by completing the 572 mile final stage of the event, held on open roads remember, at a blistering 137 mph average to recover a 2nd place finish overall. That 137 mph average for the eighth stage of the Carrera Panamericana has never been beaten.

In 1955 Lou Buero became the owner of the car now repainted dark red / brown during the 1955 season Carrol Shelby drove the car to a victory at Torrey Pines. Lou Buero then had the head cylinder heads crack at the end of season races at Nassau and #0286AM would then go unseen in public for 39 years.

It turns out that the reports of the car being buried in the earth were just a tad far of the mark, after Lou Buero Snr passed away his son had tried to revive #0286AM by attempting to fit a Jaguar motor and gearbox, however having failed he entombed the car in a 20ft trailer barricading it in so that no one could steal it in 1956. The myth of the car being buried in the ground stemming perhaps the inevitable Chinese Whispers over the ensuing 39 years owing to the dark red / colour of the car when it was last seen and the fact that it had been entombed in a trailer.

#0286AM was in need of a ground up restoration after spending 35 years in less than ideal conditions in Arcata, California, galvanic corrosion of the steering wheel had been so bad the wood rim of the steering wheel had dropped off ! The process began in 1994 and by 1997 Phil Hill was reunited with #0286AM and he promptly drove it to victory at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. That same year #0286AM also won the Pebble Beach Cup at the Concours d’Elegance.

Thinwall Special #4 – Ferrari 375 #010

Having failed to become a regular Grand Prix contender with his first attempt at building the Ferrari 125 F1, Ferrari’s second attempt at building a Grand Prix car was based around a 4.5 litre / 274 cui normally aspirated V12 motor designed by Aurelio Lampredi.

The 375 proved a more competitive proposition against the 1.5 litre / 91 cui supercharged pre war designs of Alfa Romeo that were the class of post WW2 Grand Prix fields. Jose Froilan Gonzalez was at the wheel of a 375 when he won the 1951 British Grand Prix, claiming the marques first victory in a World Championship Grand Prix Race.

The fourth and final 1952 Thinwall Special seen here at the Donington Collection, shares the same, long Indianapolis chassis design as the Grant Piston Ring Special. This car should not be confused with the third Thinwall Special which comprised the Ferrari 125 chassis I looked at last week fitted with a 375 type motor that scored a famous victory in the rain shortened International Trophy at Silverstone in 1951.

Piero Taruffi won the first and second of 8 victories recorded for this car at Dundrod and Silverstone in 1952. Mike Hawthorn and Nino Farina were also engaged to drive the car in 1952 and 1953. Peter Collins appears to have been the last driver to race this car, owned by Tony Vandervell, in 1954.
