Mello Yello – Vauxhall Senator

Towards the end of last year I spotted a familiar paint scheme on the streets of Bristol on an equally familiar type of vehicle in a totally unfamiliar combination.

A couple of day’s later with my i-phone in hand I was able to photographically verify I really did see a Mello Yello liveried 1992 Vauxhall Senator.

The Mello Yello paint scheme will be familiar to NASCAR fans and Tom Cruise fans as the one Tom Cruise made famous in the film Days of Thunder.

The Vauxhall Carlton will be familiar to regular GALPOT readers as the British market incarnation of the German built Cadillac Catera.

It turns out this car was prepared, or at least stickered up, to take part in a “Wacky Rally“.

A Wacky Rally seems to be a combination of treasure hunt and fun run often in aid of charity with cheap old motor vehicles. It is not a competitive event in the manner of a road race or timed rally.

This particular event was a four day run from the UK down to Barcelona via Monte Carlo, a good deal more leisurely than Cole Trickles rubbin’ and racin’ adventures as depicted in days of thunder.

Ferrari Ads & Cover – GALPOT Automobilia

Shell Advertisement, Chaparral, Ferrari, Ford,Porsche,

A couple of Ferrari items I put up for auction on e-bay at lightpress this week include this Shell advertisement published in MotorSport in October 1967 showcasing the success of Shell sponsored cars in the 1967 world sports car championship which was won by Ferrari after Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt driving a Ford won the 1967 Le Mans 24 hour series glamour event and Chaparral won the BOAC 500 mile race at Brands Hatch with Phil Hill and Mike Spence sharing the driving.

Despite the model being out of production for 3 years by the time it was published, this July 1971 Castrol GTX advertisement features a Ferrari 275 GTB/4.

Finally from August 1971 the front cover of MotorSport featuring Clay Regazzoni driving a Ferrari 312PB during the 1971 Zeltweg 1000 kms sports car race in Austria.

Push Button Door Handle – Ford Custom Deluxe Station Wagon

By 1950 American automotive innovation was gathering pace, for 1949 Ford introduced independent coil sprung front suspension to the Ford Custom Deluxe replacing the transverse leaf spring that had been around since at least the Model T.

For 1950 the Custom Deluxe motors received a new camshaft, timing gear and three blade cooling fan, these improvements did not noticeably improve the performance of the 100 hp L head V8 with three speed transmission and overdrive for high speed cruising.

A torsion bar was added to the front suspension and the steering linkage was improved to give “finger tip” control, though this was not power assisted.

Ford started more attention to the smaller details of the 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe introducing push button door handles with rotary latches, while economies were made within with only the drivers seat covered in leather while the rest were clad in vinyl.

The top of the range Ford Custom Deluxe woodie station wagon cost $2,107 new, this one, a former resident of Dana Point, CA, seen at Bonham’s auction at Goodwood Revival a couple of years ago was expected to fetch between £28,000 and £32,000.

Neighbours Shadows – Ironstone Concours d’Elegance.

Today’s blog comes courtesy of Geoffrey Horton who took part in the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance back in September.

Among the cars saw was this 1955 OSCA MT4, built by the Maserati brothers once they were free of obligations to the company bearing their own name, said to have been raced on the West Coast from 1955 to 1957.

Just over two years ago I learned about a mystery batch of recreations of Ferrari 196 S V6 powered sports cars, it appears the Dino V6 seen here might belong to another car from that mystery batch.

At Ironstone Geoffrey was pleasantly surprised to learn that Dennis Losher who restored this wonderful 1971 Shadow Mk II I looked at last summer is a near neighbour.

Above another car restored by Dennis is the 3rd of 3 Dodge powered Shadow Formula 5000 open wheel cars that raced in the USA from 1975 to 1976. This car #DN6-3A is said to have been raced by the legendary Welshman Tom Pryce in the inaugural 1975 Long Beach Grand Prix and at Riverside by future 1979 World Champion Jody Scheckter, from South Africa, races from which both drivers retired with gearbox and engine problems respectively.

Narrow Gauge Thunderbird – Auto Union 1000 Sp Coupé

At the same time the Auto Union 1000 S models were launched in 1958 Auto Union launched a sports car based on the same chassis known as the 1000 Sp.

The new 1000 Sp bore a striking resemblance to the 1955 Ford Thunderbird and was soon known as the schmalspur Thunderbird, translated literally “narrow gauge Thunderbird” but usually known in the UK as the Baby Thunderbird.

The coachwork available as a hard top from 1958, or soft top from 1961, was by Baur in Stuttgart who are probably best known for their BMW conversions.

Power for the 1000 Sp 2 stroke 3 cylinder motor was up from the original 44 hp of the 1000 S models to 55 hp which gave the 1000 Sp a top speed of 87 mph, 7 mph than its lesser powered siblings.

Note the fashionable fifties column shift, not as fast as a stick shift but has the benefit of allowing your better half to snuggle up next to you with out interruptions for gear changes. Although the 1000 Sp’s were lower than the 1000 S models they were not significantly lighter.

From 1958 to 1965 5000 of the hard top Auto Union 1000 Sp’s were built. Today’s featured vehicle is seen in the Malta Classic Car Collection in Qwara.

Typ 148 RHD – Volkswagen Caddy

Strangely the Volkswagen Caddy is unknown by that name in the USA the country which gave the initial momentum to the model thanks to Volkwagen of America’s in interest in a prototype pick up version of the Golf Mk 1 Hatchback built in Germany.

The Typ 14 or more correctly Typ 147-LHD (Left Hand Drive) was first built at VW’s Westmoreland County, PA plant and sold in the US as the Rabbit Pick Up in 1979, so far as I have been able to determine production at Westmoreland ceased in 1982 and was switched to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina where production of the European Typ 147-LHD and 148 Right Hand Drive variants continued until 1992. Production of Caddy’s continued in South Africa until 2007 alongside Mk 1 Golf’s which them selves were in production up until 2009.

European Typ 14’s were only ever marketed as Volkswagen Caddy’s where confusion of the name with supersize 5000lb 500 cui V8 US land yachts was less likely.

The Typ 14 Caddy is not to be confused with later variants, Typ 9K Polo Mk III based Caddy, Typ 9U Škoda Felicia pick-up or Typ Golf Mk 5 based Volkswagen Touran.

Today’s 1989 Caddy seen last year at the Spring Performance Car Action Day at Castle Combe appears to be powered by the high end 70 hp petrol motor.

The Ambassador’s Embassy – Shadow Cosworth DN1 #DN1-3A

Ten years after winning his first World Championship driving for BRM, in 1963, and five years after winning his second World Championship driving for Lotus, in 1968 (Norman) Graham Hill had become the senior citizen of the sport with wins at Indianapolis in 1966 and at Le Mans in 1972 to make a unique triple crown of victories which only he has achieved, making him arguably the most versatile driver in the history of the sport. Graham was also the first man to win the Monaco Grand Prix five times a record that was not equaled until 1992 and beaten until 1993 when Ayrton Senna won his fifth and sixth Monaco Grand Prix victories.

As the wise cracking head of Embassy, UK brand cigarettes, quipped in 1973 at the launch of Graham Hills Embassy sponsored Formula One Team every ambassador needs an Embassy. Graham’s was built by, the then relatively unknown in Europe, Shadow a team that had cut it’s teeth in Can Am primarily with Graham Hill’s former Lotus Team mate Jackie Oliver.

The Shadow DN1 was designed by Tony Southgate who’s CV includes designing the last two BRM’s to win major races the P160, an example of which Jackie Oliver had driven in 1972, and P180 which bears a familial resemblance to today’s featured DN1 apart from the fact that the latter is powered by a by 1973 ubiquitous Ford sponsored Cosworth V8 which Graham Hill had been instrumental in testing back in 1967.

Under the umbrella of Mr Shadow, Don Nichols, sponsored by UOP Lead Free fuel the Shadow team ran two black works cars for Jackie Oliver and 1972 Can Am Champion George Follmer and sold a third car #DN1-3A to Graham Hill for him to run as a privateer. Not for the first, or the last, time none of the Shadow cars were ready for the start of the season the works team missed two races before making their debut in South Africa where George starting 21st came through to finish 6th and score a single world championship point on his Grand Prix debut.

Graham’s car was ready at the next race the Spanish Grand Prix where Graham qualified 22nd but failed to finish after experiencing problems with his brakes, while George Follmer came through to a seasons equal best 3rd place finish in his second championship Grand Prix. At the Belgian Grand Prix Graham qualified 23rd and came through to finish ninth which would prove to be his best result in an otherwise totally frustrating year for his fledgling Embassy Racing Team.

The works UOP Shadow teams debut season was similarly also fraught with disappointment until the Canadian Grand Prix where Jackie Oliver scored his a career equaling best third place finish, five years after he had finished 3rd in the 1968 Mexican Grand Prix. For the 1974 season Graham Hill took his Embassy sponsorship to Lola while Jackie Oliver and George Follmer returned to the Can Am series where they finished 1st and 2nd respectively when the series finally stopped one race short of the scheduled season.

Jackie Oliver became increasingly involved in the management of the Shadow team while keeping his hand in driving the mighty Dodge powered Shadow DN6 Formula 5000 cars and put in a one off final Formula One appearance at the 1977 Swedish GP where he finished 9th.
