The Harmony Deal – Buick Electra 225 Riviera

In 1959 Buick dropped the full size premium Roadmaster and Roadmaster 75 model names in favor of the Electra and Electra 225 names. The first generation Electras were superseded in 1961 with new models with much smaller fins and cleaner squared styling.

Today’s featured car is a 1962 6 window Electra 225 Riviera a body style shared with the 1962 Cadillacs. The 225 refers to the cars overall 225 inch length from which it derived the nick name “deuce and a quarter”.

All 2nd Generation Electra’s shared the same 325 hp Super Thrust Wildcat 6.5 litre /401 cui V8 motors and up until 1964 all Electra’s had the same 2 speed Dynaflow Transmission.

It was almost certainly not evident too Buick Designer Bill Mitchel at the time but the vertical adornment ahead of the rear bumper was an uncanny omen of the safety bumpers that were to appear in the 1970’s and 1980’s particularly on the Volvo 700 series vehicles first seen in 1982.

As might be expected the premium Buick Electra came comprehensively loaded with two speed electric windscreen wipers, cigar lighter, step on parking brake, glove box light, power steering, power windows, anti glare rear view mirror, two way power seats an courtesy lights to name a few.

A couple of years ago I came very close to taking a bus trip to Ashville NC in order to visit a friend in Brevard, unfortunately I was persuaded that my stay would inevitably be so short I may as well go and visit some other friends for a little longer. It turns out that Deal of Ashville NC was taken over by new owners Harmony Motors who operate a VW/Audi/Porsche dealership from the same site as Deal when they supplied this Electra 225 fifty one years ago.

Buick Electra 225 Riviera, Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Last year a similar monotone 6 window Buick Electra 225 Riviera fetched a fraction over $17,000 at auction which seems like a lot of sheet metal for the money.

My thanks to Toni Burrell at Harmony Motors Asheville NC for taking the time to fill me in on what happened to Deal.

Thanks for joining me on this “The Harmony Deal” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to came back now !

Coffee, Croissant & Cars #9 – Avenue Drivers Club

With another, UK Style, snowmageddon predicted for the weekend I was wondering if anybody would be turning up for this months Avenue Drivers Club meeting at Queen Square a couple of weekends ago, fortunately the snow held off and all we got was rain and cold winds which was insufficient to deter a hard core from turning up.

Aston Martin DB2, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Every see I see Duncan Pittaway he seems to be driving a different car, in January he was driving a TVR on the Exeter Trial and he turned up for the Avenue Drivers Club meeting with this 1952 Aston Martin DB2.

Ford Consul 375, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Since I first met Mark a couple of months ago his enthusiasm for his recently purchased Ford Consul 375 has never ceased to amaze me, he has been replacing all the faded badges on his car, this Consul 375 badge was sourced on e-bay in Australia.

Austin Healey 3000 Mk III, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Austin Healey’s in Bristol are usually associated with John “Mr Big Healey” Chatham who has raced and rallied, rebuilt repaired and renovated more Healey’s like this 1966 3000 Mk III than I have had hot dinners in a life dedicated to the models over 40 years.

Jaguar S-Type, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

The 3.8 litre Jaguar S-Type was the more popular variant of the model affectionately known at the Jaguar factory as the “Ugly Duckling“, this one was built in 1967.

Moving forwards a couple of decades this third generation Mercedes Benz 300SL Auto was built in 1987.

Ferrari 328 GTS, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

There are two wheel patterns seen on 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS models the original concave pattern seen here denotes that it is not fitted with the option ABS brakes and attendant new suspension geometry which required convex wheel patterns.

Mazda Eunos RS, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

So far as I have been able to discern above is one of just 500 1994 Mazda Eunos Roadster RS special edition models built for the the Japanese market. 49 of these vehicles fitted with Recardo seats, extra chassis bracing, lightened flywheel, Torsen limited slip differential and Bilstein dampers were personally imported into the UK and 46 of them appear to still be here.

MG-F, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

This 1999 MG-F will have been going head to head with the Mazda MX5 for UK sales, the MG-F was the first model to be offered with a Variable Valve Control that was infinitely variable between set parameters, the VVC option improved power output by 25% and torque by 5%.

ALFA Romeo 156, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Welsh heart throb Catherine Zeta Jones made an unbelievable television advertisement with a sound track from Welsh superstars EMF for the ALFA Romeo Sportwagon, linked here, back in the day. Above is a 2001 example fitted with a 2.5 litre / 152 cui V6 petrol motor.

Holden VZ Ute SSZ, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Representing the Antipodes was this 2005 Holden VZ Ute SSZ above is another special edition fitted with a 5.7 litre / 347 cui V8. Thanks to Peter Darley and Wirra over at The Nostalgia Forum we know that only 1200 AUS$ 40,490 Ute SSZ’s were built and that they were fitted with AUS$ 6,250 worth of extra’s which included the 18″ Morano alloy wheels.

Ferrari F 430 Scuderia, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Fastest vehicle to attend the February Avenue Drivers club meeting was the 198 mph 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia above.

Subaru BRZ, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Finally when I saw the vehicle above approaching I thought it was a Toyota GT86 however closer inspection revealed it was actually an almost identical, apart from the badges, Subaru BRZ.

Don’t Try This At Home – MG Metro 6R4

In 1980 and 1981 the Leyland Commercial Vehicles sponsored Williams Grand Prix team won the World Drivers Championship (1980) with Alan Jones and two consecutive World Constructors championships with their Patrick Head designed FW07’s. During 1981 one of Austin Rover who were part of the British Leyland Group approached Patrick to help them design a new rally car to conform to the forthcoming Group B regulations that mandated 200 identical cars to be built and a further 20 evolutionary competition versions.

MG Metro 6R4, Race Retro, Stoneleigh

The car Austin Rover wanted to promote was the recently launched Metro and because this was a competition vehicle the MG brand was the natural version to promote. Patrick head and his team built a space frame chassis that housed the motor behind the driver and equipped the car with four wheel drive. Apart from the roof panel, windscreen, doors, front grill and lights which were MG Metro sourced every other part of the car was competition spec.

MG Metro 6R4, Race Retro, Stoneleigh

The first prototypes were seen in 1984 powered by an interim V6 version of the aluminium Rover V8 engine which produced around 250 hp. The car was subsequently tested in numerous national rally events and proved to be quick while it last.

MG Metro 6R4, Race Retro, Stoneleigh

In March 1985 Tony Pond and Rod Arthur won for the first time in a 6R4 on the Gwynedd Rally in Wales.

MG Metro 6R4, Race Retro, Stoneleigh

By now the car had grown wings at the front and rear and had a lengthened wheel base. The car was also now fitted with what is probably the only motor designed specifically from scratch for a rallying application namely the V64V a 3 litre / 183 cui normally aspirated V6 with four valves per cylinder and double overhead cam shafts that could be tuned to give over 400 hp.

MG Metro 6R4, Race Retro, Stoneleigh

When fitted to the Metro the car could accelerate from rest to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds an achievement compatible with contemporaneous Formula One cars. The V64V would later achieve success in Group C2 racing where it was used by Ecurie Ecosse to win the 1986 Group C2 championship and later still the V64V was fitted twin turbo chargers and fitted to the Jaguar XJ220.

MG Metro 6R4, RAC Rally

The Metro 6R4’s debut in the World Championship Rally was in the 1985 RAC Rally, which happened to start about two miles from where I was living in Nottingham that year. The #10 of Tony Pond and Rob Arthur, which is seen blasting through a forest on the opening day above, would record an excellent third place behind two Lancia Delta S4, which were also on their debut appearance.

MG Metro 6R4, RAC Rally

Malcom Wilson and Nigel Harris seen on the same stage above retired with engine failure after completing 23 of the 63 stages. I took these photographs in a non approved area and was pelted with stones from the gravel track as the cars passed by. With the benefit of hindsight this is not recommended at home, the following year 1985 RAC winner Henri Toivonen and co driver Sergio Cresto were killed when their Lancia Delta S4 plunged into a Corsican ravine and caught fire on impact earlier in the season a Group B car slid into a crowd on a special stage injuring 30 spectators and killing 3 more.

These two fatal events led the sports governing body the FIA to ban Group B from the end of 1986 with several teams withdrawing from the sport immediately.

My thanks to Sterling49 and Tim Murray at the Nostalgia Forum for helping to identify the drivers and co-drivers of the two cars seen on the RAC Rally.

Excelsior Twin Carb – Berkeley Sports SE328 Deluxe

Berkeley was Europe’s leading manufacturer of fiber glass caravans when it diversified into car manufacture in 1956 to fill seasonal gaps in it’s manufacturing capacity.

After 163 SA322’s had been built the original 11 hp 322cc/19.65 British Anzani motorcycle engine was replaced by a 18hp 328cc / 20 cui Excelsior motorcycle engine of the type seen above. Today’s featured car is a Delux version distinguished by the twin carburetors. The two stroke motor is started with the aid of a Dynastart electric motor that also served to charge the battery once the 2 stroke motor was set in motion.

42 Day Wonder – Lotus Renault 94T #94/2

As the 1983 Grand Prix season approached the halfway mark Team Lotus who were running a Renault Turbo powered Lotus 93T for Elio De Angelis and a Ford Cosworth powered Lotus 92 for Nigel Mansell had scored but one point and many retirements.

Lotus Renault 94T, Goodwood Festival of Speed

Without there erstwhile genius Colin Chapman who had died in December 1982 Peter Warr who found himself in charge of Lotus Formula One team took a gamble and hired Gerard Ducarouge who had been fired from the Alfa Romeo team earlier in the season.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

Ducarouge who had penned winning designs for Ligier came up with the new Lotus 94T in just 42 days and Team Lotus turned up with two of the Renault powered cars at the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

De Angelis qualified 4th and Mansell 18th but in the race it was Mansell who finished 4th while de Andelis retired on the 2nd lap with turbo failure. At the next race in Germany neither car qualified in the top 10, only de Angelis’s 94T made it to the start and he retired after 10 laps with engine failure.

At the Austrian Grand Prix Mansell qualified 3rd with de Angelis 12th, Mansell finished 5th while de Angelis retired after a collision on the opening lap. In Holland de Angelis qualified 3rd and Mansell 5th but both cars retired de Angelis with electrical problems and Mansell after a spin.

At de Angelis’s home track Monza he qualified 8th with Mansell back in 11th both cars finsihed for the the first time with de Angelis 5th and Mansell in 8th.

04 12 05 17 #12 EUGP 83sc

The 1983 European Grand Prix was held at Brands Hatch and de Angelis scored Lotus first post Chapman pole position with Mansell seen here on his way to 3rd on the grid. In the race de Angelis oil pump failed but Mansell came home third, recording the races fastest lap in the process.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

At the last race of the season in South Africa Mansell qualified 7th with de Angelis in 11, Elio retired with engine failure while Nigel was running but unclassified 9 laps behind at the end of the race.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

The Renault Gordini EF1 V6 Turbo was considered a bit of a joke when first seen at the British Grand Prix in 1977 but steady development had seen a rise in horsepower and reliability that forced first Ferrari and then BMW to take the turbo charged route to competitiveness at motor racing’s top table.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

Lotus had first dabbled with a multi plane rear wing in 1974 with the type 76, Gerard Ducarouge was on his own in the Grand Prix paddock with the four plane rear wing seen here, it was not a feature that carried over into the following season.

Lotus Renault 94T, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

In 42 days Gerard Ducarouge had turned the fortunes of Lotus around they finished the season with 12 points 11 of which were claimed with the new car. Due to the immediate improvement in results John Player Special renewed their sponsorship of the team for the 1984 season.

The chassis seen in all of the photographs here is #94/2 driven exclusively by Nigel Mansell in the British, Austrian, Dutch, Italian, European and South African Grand Prix.

Steel Shell Camelion – Ferrari 250 GT SWB #3087

According to the best records at my disposal today’s steel shelled Ferrari 250 GT SWB chassis #3087 was originally supplied painted midnight blue with a tan interior to Otello Feretti of Bologna in December 1961.
